Fishtown, slowly

Frankford Avenue is the spine, the river is the backyard, and the best night here is one long walk with a few stops.

Fishtown is where a lot of Philly goes out now. It's a river ward rowhome neighborhood that got loud, then expensive, then kind of famous, and it still has the corner bars and fish-shaped house signs to prove where it came from. Frankford Avenue runs from Girard north up into Kensington and carries most of the action: music rooms, coffee, pizza, arcade beer, thrift.

Come hungry, come with good shoes, and plan to land somewhere with a stage. If you're bouncing between neighborhoods, Northern Liberties is right next door and the walk between them is short.

The Fishtown vibe, and how it got the name

The name is literal. Fishtown was the center of the city's shad fishing business on the Delaware, and some houses still hang little fish-shaped address signs out front. There's a story that Charles Dickens named it on an 1842 visit. The name was already in use, so don't repeat that one at the bar.

Long before the fishermen, this stretch of riverbank was Shackamaxon, a Lenape village. Legend puts William Penn's peace treaty with the Lenape chief Tamanend under a big elm here in the early 1680s. The elm came down in a storm in 1810, and the city opened Penn Treaty Park on the spot in the 1890s.

Today it's a mix of longtime families who remember the old corner taprooms and a newer crowd that moved in for the venues and restaurants. Both groups are out on Frankford on a Friday. Mostly they get along.

Things to do in Fishtown

Nearly everything below sits on or just off Frankford Avenue, so you can string it together on foot. Go after dark for the music rooms, go on a weekend afternoon for the shops and the park.

  • Fishtown

    Johnny Brenda's

    1201 N. Frankford Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19125

The corner of Frankford and Girard, and the room that put Fishtown's music scene on the map. Upstairs is a roughly 250-capacity venue with a two-level layout and a handmade balcony looking down on the stage, mostly indie rock, local and touring.

Downstairs is a regular bar with a real kitchen and a beer list that sticks to regional breweries. It gets packed, so a table is luck.

TipGet the shoestring fries downstairs before doors, then head up early and grab a balcony rail spot.

  • Fishtown

    The Fillmore Philadelphia

    29 E. Allen St., Philadelphia, PA 19123

The big room. It's a converted old AJAX metal factory just off Frankford with exposed brick and giant chandeliers, and the main floor holds about 2,500. The Foundry upstairs is the club inside the club, around 450 people, for DJs, local bands and smaller tours.

Expect a security line and a proper arena-lite night. The Foundry is the better hang if you hate crowds.

TipCheck whether your show is in the main room or The Foundry before you show up. They're different nights.

  • Fishtown waterfront

    Penn Treaty Park

    1301 N. Beach St., Philadelphia, PA 19125

A small, grassy riverfront park at Beach Street and Delaware Avenue with a walkway around an open green and old shade trees on the north end. There's a small obelisk marking the treaty site, and a descendant of the original elm was planted here in 2010.

It's one of the better spots in the neighborhood to watch the river and the bridge lights. It's also a public park, which means it's a ticket if you light up there. People do. Your call is not to.

TipGo around sunset with a coffee and a snack. It's the cheapest good view in the neighborhood.

  • Fishtown

    Barcade

1114 Frankford Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19125

A 21+ arcade bar with a deep wall of classic cabinets, a stack of pinball machines and a rotating craft draft list. It's a spinoff of the original Brooklyn spot.

This is the stop when the group can't agree on anything. Somebody plays Galaga, somebody plays pinball, nobody has to talk.

TipWeeknights are calmer and you won't wait for the good machines.

  • Fishtown

    La Colombe Fishtown

1335 Frankford Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19125

The coffee roaster's flagship, opened in 2014 in a huge warehouse space with a cafe, bar, bakery and food menu. It's big enough to actually find a seat, which matters on Frankford.

    There's no Wi-Fi, so it's a talking and people-watching room, not a laptop room. That's the point.

TipStart a Frankford walk here, coffee in hand, then work your way south toward Girard.

  • Fishtown

    Jinxed Fishtown

1331 Frankford Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19125

Next door to La Colombe, a vintage and antique shop full of weird stuff: globes, marbles, chandelier crystals, old golf clubs, the occasional popcorn machine. The stock turns over fast.

It's the kind of place you go in for five minutes and leave with a lamp you didn't need.

TipThe good pieces go quick, so if you see it, buy it.

  • Fishtown

    Palmer Park

Frankford Ave. & E. Palmer St., Philadelphia, PA 19125

A small neighborhood park right on Frankford, good for a breather halfway through a walk. Across the street is a big fish mural.

Bench, shade, done. Same public park rules apply.

Where to eat in Fishtown

Fishtown eats well for a neighborhood this size. Some of these need planning, some you can walk into with sauce on your shirt. For the citywide munchies list, hit the eat page.

  • Fishtown

    Pizzeria Beddia

    1313 N. Lee St., Philadelphia, PA 19122

Look for the neon green peace sign on a narrow little street. Inside it's light wood, booths, shared tables and a horseshoe counter facing the oven. The dough is made in house with organic flour, and the crust is crisp and chewy at the same time.

The menu is short, five pies plus snacks and natural wine. It holds a Bib Gourmand in the 2025 Michelin Guide.

TipSit at the counter if you can. Watching the pies come out is half the show.

  • Fishtown

    Joe's Steaks + Soda Shop

    1 W. Girard Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19123

The Fishtown outpost of a Northeast Philly cheesesteak name that goes back to 1949. It opened on Girard in 2015.

Steaks, crinkle fries and real milkshakes in a soda shop setting. Exactly the menu your brain is asking for.

TipGet a shake with the steak. Don't overthink it.

  • Fishtown

    Loco Pez

    2401 E. Norris St., Philadelphia, PA 19125

Half neighborhood dive, half Mexican kitchen, a few blocks off the main drag. Cheap tacos, big nachos, margaritas and a deep tequila shelf.

It's the low-stakes move when you want to eat a lot and spend a little.

TipOrder more tacos than you think. You'll eat them.

  • Fishtown

    Kalaya

    4 W. Palmer St., Philadelphia, PA 19125

A big Thai restaurant with an open kitchen, and one of the hardest tables in the neighborhood. Reservations go fast.

This is the dinner you plan, not the dinner you stumble into.

TipBook ahead. Walking in on a Saturday is optimism.

  • Fishtown

    Johnny Brenda's (the kitchen)

    1201 N. Frankford Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19125

Worth listing twice. The downstairs kitchen does sandwiches, seafood, kabobs and those shoestring fries, with a menu that leans on local produce, and it serves late.

Eating here before a show upstairs is the most efficient night in Fishtown.

A perfect Fishtown night

Start around late afternoon at La Colombe with a coffee and something from the bakery, then poke into Jinxed next door. Walk south on Frankford, stop at Palmer Park for a minute, and grab an early pie at Pizzeria Beddia before the dinner crowd. Hit Barcade for an hour of pinball and a beer. Catch the late set at Johnny Brenda's or whoever's in The Foundry at the Fillmore. If you still have legs, end at Penn Treaty Park for the river and the bridge lights, then grab a ride home. The real after-party is somebody's roof deck or back patio, which is where Fishtown's actual sesh culture lives.

Neighborhoods next door

Northern Liberties is just southwest across Girard, with bowling, Standard Tap and Liberty Lands. Keep going south and you hit Old City and the waterfront piers.
